Lawrence A. Maxham, the founder of the San Diego patent law firm, THE MAXHAM FIRM, has been practicing patent and trademark law for more than fifty years. He earned a degree in electronic engineering from Tufts University, where he was a member of the national engineering honor society, Tau Beta Pi. Mr. Maxham’s law degree is from Boston College Law School, where he was a member of the law review and the national legal honor society, Order of the Coif. Mr. Maxham practiced for fifteen years in Boston before relocating to San Diego. He has prepared and prosecuted more than 1,500 U.S. patent applications and at least as many trademark applications, and has done opinion and licensing work in technologies of all types, including mechanical, computer, electronic and electro-mechanical, and plant patents. International trademarks and patent applications also number in the hundreds.
Mr. Maxham is admitted to the State Bars of California (1982) and Massachusetts (1966), is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (1967), and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Central Districts of California and the District of Massachusetts. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First and Ninth Circuits, the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., which has exclusive appellate jurisdiction over patent validity and infringement cases, and the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Maxham is an active member of many local, state, national, and international legal and professional organizations. He is a past president of the San Diego Patent Law Association and the Boston Patent Law Association, is a current member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the International Trademark Association, was recording secretary of the US Bar/European Patent Office Liaison Council for thirteen years and served two years as its chairman. He has taught classes on intellectual property at University of San Diego, University of California at San Diego, and has made similar presentations at many other organizations.
Mr. Maxham and his firm represent several companies in San Diego, as well as a number of companies in other parts of the United States and in several foreign countries. The Firm handles all technologies, from simple mechanical to high tech.
